It’s a happy planet for the Bicycle Racing Industry — a good thing and not for a few minutes on a too hot Florida afternoon. Cyclocross has finally been recognized as a full-fledged racing series under the USA Cycling Development Program and is as good an affirmation as one could ask for.
Bicycling World USA’s Rob Garton confirms that the series’ top-ranked team, Belgian powerhouse Pure Mgmt, will receive a $2.25M grant, which will be a major help for its recruitment of local young talent (details HERE). Its importance will spread beyond racing though; for a sport with surprisingly little sex appeal it’s suddenly more likely that guys will find it appealing in general as they see increased TV coverage, media presence, spectator events and of course, sponsors. Elsewhere, it had been thought that the series would have to return some of that largesse to the promoters and agents of the 10 teams in the series.
All of which offers a shrewd business-like optimism, which can’t be bad for the health of any of the participants and the parties implicated in the cyclocross movement.
