(windows, more info) – this is a port of a japanese rpg off of the ps2, so i have no idea what you do in this game. i can tell you it’s a bit like, well, a combination of the rpg and platform game genres. however, that’s a bit vague. i’m not sure how to say what it is, but there’s some shooting in this, some time-trial play, and some driving, but no one aspect is clearly dominant. it’s best in small doses, and can be played entirely in co-op if you’re feeling shy about buying another copy, as each of your four characters has a differing amount of progress to make. some characters will shoot better, some are stronger, some run faster, and some even fall from great heights more often. each character’s level keeps pace with the others, so it’s no real problem to advance the entire party at once, but the high level areas should be saved for when there are only a few of you.
analysis: agon is a puzzling game in an old-fashioned narrative sense. you play as an unnamed character with only hints at your own identity, and the story is also a mystery. if the plot is to be believed, you’re a man who’s about to be hanged. you’re given a few moments to reflect on your life, before the trapdoor opens and you throw yourself out as the rope quickly tightens around you. you hope to do so without a traitorous relative or enemy falling into the trap, of course. you feel the sadness the man in the story feels, as he can’t say goodbye to his wife or save his daughter from sad fate, and it makes for a moment where i’m legitimately sad for this man and wish i had more time to try to understand his pain. it’s not a perfect moment, but it’s one that made me feel something, and it all started with an interesting combination of text, graphics, and audio. the narrative is pitched firmly at the children’s market, but it’s charming and well-done enough that even adults will find something to enjoy if they’re in the mood for a brief story with classic themes like those found in a link to the past or the legend of zelda: majora’s mask. all told, agon is a flawed but interesting game, and it’s one of the handful of titles to do things so well that they stick in your mind.
starve the game is, quite simply, one of the best little freeware indie games i’ve come across. the game is nothing more than a simple grid of square blocks, and the idea is to starve a group of creatures to death. as there is no goal in the game aside from basic survival (and who likes to starve themselves?), you are free to explore the levels and collect as many stars as you can. this means there’s no pressure, no goals, and no end. it also means there’s lots of stuff to eat. lots. it’s like a cross between a bird’s nest, an arboretum, and a mix of grains, nuts, and other dried fruit and grains. the happy result is a game that is filling and nutritious. all that’s left is to play it. believe me, you’ll find an excuse to play it. it’s been awhile since i’ve played a good drm-free game on linux (i really did love crawl), so to start playing the sacra terra series, i was a little surprised to find that the game is not only drm-free, but available as a windows, mac os x, and linux package. sacra terra: angelic night is a free mix of rpg and tower defence mechanics. you take on the role of a knight raised under the tutelage of an angel. as a game this is simple enough. it’s all pretty standard fare. you start with some limited equipment and a paltry army of 4 knights, and you’re sent out on an adventure to a distant land.. sacra terra’s first area is along a winding, dusty road, and is mostly composed of a stretch of linear progression. while the flow of the level is perfect, the area is pretty bland and somewhat lacking in challenge. however, this is only the first of several, and the game really opens up into truly interesting terrain later on. 5ec8ef588b
