One of the biggest challenges facing the Peace Corps in San Francisco is the lack of medical equipment. There is no X-ray or MRI or ultrasound machine, just an interoffice machine from 1919, an infusion pump from 1987, a Windel-fluid-costing syringe from 1925 and a heparin lock from 1993.
One volunteer built a modernized X-ray machine out of his basement for $600 and is working with Public Health to develop an X-ray machine.
Another volunteer is able to travel to other parts of the city on her own by taking a taxi or the BART train, but volunteers here have a 15-mile radius.
This is one of the reasons why volunteers in San Francisco tend to get by with a lot of acupuncture, massage, and acupuncture. Acupuncture helps to alleviate medication, the lack of which is a major problem in the Peace Corps world.
However, many volunteers in other countries have been working towards installing medical equipment for as long as they have been in the Peace Corps. This has been a major challenge for Alaskan volunteers, who have had to contend with housing sparse resources.
Yet, there is a bright side. The San Francisco Peace Corps office had to purchase a bike to get around the city, but it was purchased from one of the volunteers in the office.
I think that this is a great example of how the Peace Corps idea can really work. The Peace Corps staff here has to become local to the community they are building. I think that working with the local community, which this Peace Corps staff has done, is the best way for Peace Corps staff to gain a strong, loyal, and fruitful volunteer community in a short time. This is one of the biggest challenges we face at the San Francisco Peace Corps office, but it is the only way to build the local community.
