Objective-C: classes and objects, retain, assignment

I’m trying to understand why i need to use the retain or release to a class or object that i use in a function?
What I’m trying to do is the following:
I have a class / header file (in objective-C of course):
@interface someClass
{
NSString *myString;
}
-(void)someMethod;
@end

and a.m file:
@implementation someClass
-(void)someMethod
{
NSString *myString = @”string”;
//some code
}
@end

If I do the following in the function, the NSString will retain itself and will “keep” the value until i release it in someMethod?
NSString *myString;

-(void)someMethod
{
//some code
myString = @”hello”;
//some code
}

If I do the following code, the NSString will be copied to myObject and it will be released when the program end?
myObject = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@”string”];

Sorry for my bad english.

A:

-(void)someMethod
{
//some code
myString = @”hello”;
//some code
}

Note: You should not put all lines into one method.

If I do the following code, the NSString will retain itself and will
“keep
