Although the producers had little to say in defense of the film, the distributor, Open Road Films, issued a statement saying no one at the company had anything to do with the movie. I don’t know what the producers were thinking. The film looks great. It’s got the actors. The director, David Michôd, is very good.
Because Im a big, big fan of the book, its been very frustrating because I was so emotional about this movie, and I thought it was really good and I really wanted people to experience it. But instead of my hoped-for theatrical release, as is the trend now, the movie has been pulled at the last minute. Ive wanted to sell it into television, where hopefully it would have a chance to play out.
BlacKkKlansman was already making great strides in the short term. The trick for me was writing it in the context of a movie, not as a book, for sure. I did want to tell the story of an eight-year-old girl and her experience at a very eccentric family, but I wanted it to have some cinematic overtones, some sort of narrative and characterization that was informed and rooted in the visual world. To go into a bigger material world, which I could have stayed in the text, would have felt sort of contrived, and I wanted to maintain that sense of approachability, the homely quality of the whole thing. The book is a book, and it could stay a book. It could be more personal, and it could be more off-the-cuff, which it is in some ways, but it could have an audience.
