“It’s amazing to learn there’s a concept called ‘caregiving’ because for the families, this is every day, every day of their lives,” she said.
The $18-million respite program provides funding to non-profit social service agencies that can help families deal with the weight of their duties by offering respite services that range from in-home respite to travelling to different locations.
MacKenzie said that the goal of the program is to make a difference for families so they can care for their children and “access all the services they need to improve their lives.”
“What we know is that they spend hours and hours, every day, supporting their children and caring for their children’s needs,” she said. “This program will support them so they can live their life and do the things that matter to them.”
The program is being implemented in Edmonton, Leduc and Grande Prairie, while MacKenzie said she hopes to have it in place in Calgary by the fall of 2017.
Launching the program in Alberta was also meant to help influence funding decisions for the federal government as a way to stimulate areas of the economy that are suffering, such as health care.
The respite program is open to all non-profit agencies that provide services and support to people with developmental disabilities and autism.
