the texas assessment of knowledge and skills (taks) tests are no longer being administered. former taks examinees (including former texas assessment of knowledge and skills (taas) and texas educational assessment of minimal skills (teams) examinees) can take the appropriate state of texas assessments of academic readiness (staar) test. staar may be used as an alternate assessment to meet graduation testing requirements for former taks, taas, and teams examinees.
texas education agency (tea) administers the taks test in all texas public school districts. the taks test is only administered in some districts in the state. taks is not administered in a district if all students are tested as part of the state mandated testing program for the district. taks is not administered in an individual school where all students are tested as part of the state mandated testing program for the school.
The “Evaluation Component” is designed to provide prospective students information about the college’s academic programs, students, and the overall learning experience. Once admitted to the college, students will complete “The Success Intermediate Test”.
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) program is designed to help all students succeed in college through a developmental approach, where each student progresses at his or her own rate. A developmental approach allows students to choose to focus on the areas that they need more attention, without being overwhelmed by the need to meet the system’s minimum requirements.
In their book, Generic Design and Assessment of Learning, the authors described the following three levels of assessment for students: identification, diagnosis, and developmental assessments. The first level is to identify students’ understanding of the content by assessing their knowledge, while the second is to diagnose students’ understanding of the content by diagnosing how well they can apply or use that knowledge. The third level is to provide students with feedback to enable them to learn from their experience of learning. Assessment that is designed to be for a specific purpose is explained in the next chapter. Such assessment needs to be designed with a clear purpose in mind.
The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is a measure of what students know and what they have done. The TAKS tests are designed to measure the total amount of knowledge needed to be successful in college level courses. TAAS/TEAMS examinees are directed to take their placement test (TAKS). The purpose of the TAKS is to provide a measure of the minimum requisite knowledge for successful college-level course work. The test is a comprehensive, performance-based measure of the level of student knowledge, skills and critical thinking, knowledge-based thinking, and knowledge-based reading comprehension.
