In all honesty, looking at a collection of reviews by teachers is the easiest way to get an overall picture of the violin. Some of these reviews, such as those by Gene Feist and Barbara Aronowitz, provide insight as to how the rest of the book relates to the whole.
It is difficult not to be drawn by the beautiful quality of the drawings. They are alive and full of color and yet not out of place or much more the case. These pictures could be part of a designer collection on a coffee table or bar table (if I were a decorator or bartender) or in the homes of people who play the violin. You see, color is important in life, and music is no different.
I enjoyed the text throughout the book. No matter how old a student may be, at any stage the reading is enjoyable. I found that the ‘delusions’ can be applied to any situation in life where one is in the situation of not knowing what to do. So, for example, in reading the “A-ha!” section of chapter 2, I identified with his feelings.
The chapters are written from the perspective of the violin in general, of the first violin section, and then the second. Though this may not be a problem for younger students who are not now playing the violin, this makes me question what happens when a student graduates to the next section? The time between sections could be the time it takes a student to make his/her jump of several years.
In a section on pedagogy, Suzuki notes that one should choose the best level for each student. For example, he says that beginning violinists should be working on technical parts. Although he does not explain what those technical parts are, one would think that they might be rhythm, simple ornamentation, and economy of motion.
