CHIEF INFORMATION DISCLAIMER The opening lines of the Qur’an, the holiest book of the Muslim faith and the word of God, are embedded in many languages: Arabic, English, Spanish, Hindi, Bengali, Russian, Indonesian, Turkish, Javanese and more. This is a poetic license, and this section is dedicated to those who have felt the need to make their translations go beyond such license.
The Arabic, the script of the Holy Book (Qur’an), is read from left to right. The first verse in the canonical text, {Allâh is the One, the Omnipresent, and the Omnipotent, who has no partners} (Quran, 1:1) is read as A’am, asemmâ. “The One, the Eternal, the All-Powerful, who has no partners.” This has often been used as an opening line to exemplify God’s perfection, however, to actually “read” the opening verse of the Qur’an one would need to read it as “Allâh was the One, the All-Powerful, who has no partners.” In other words, this line means something much different than what the above definition states. It means that there is no power higher than the almighty, but, to say that “Allâh had no partners,” is absurd. The definitions above apply to God for the fact that God has no change, or part, in Him. But the Qur’an is addressing God (the One), who is perfect and has no change in Himself. He is one, and he is not going to change.
The English, the language of the Bible and the word of God, often translates the opening lines of the Qur’an in a poetic fashion. The opening lines of the Holy Book are often translated as “The only god,” “God, the only one,” and such. Yet, the translation of the Arabic into English does not represent what the Arabic text is saying. God, in Arabic, is aalam (one), and the Arabic word for aalam is al-awlâm. Al-awlâm (one) means “ein,” which means “there is” in German. So, the opening line of the Qur’an means something like this: “
