the histories of the shins and other portland, oregon bands like elliott smith and the dandy warhols who were also raised in the pacific northwest, contain numerous similarities. not only did their regional, highly educated, and often vaguely religious parents see great value in being in the military, but each band members career also took off at the same time. indeed, mercer is often credited with being the shins frontman, although he actually created the band with his then-girlfriend, lindy goetz.
while mercer was a child and teenager, the oregon coast was a world of its own, a wild, rural, and dangerous place. military families often sent their children to summer camp on the coast during the months of june through august. the mercer family, however, was unable to afford this luxury, and mercer spent his summers on the oregon coast, playing in rock bands, and acting as guitarist in a band called coraline. the music was fun, he liked the people he played with, and he learned a lot about the musical world. he worked on his dad’s pickup truck, and learned to fix it, too. he also, like other musicians of his generation, made a career of working at the big box store where he was raised, a store that sold everything you could imagine. yet, the rural, sometimes menacing, and sometimes lonely life was good for the young mercer, a life that led him to his artistic awakening. one of the many stories that mercer tells in his memoir is about how he came to write the song new slang in 1980, the song that eventually became the opening track on chutes too narrow.
