PROTECT THE STASH From the factory, the tank is made of plastic, and cracks might develop as it ages (fig. 6). Water can deteriorate or damage the gas tank during transport and storage. If you fill the tank with a hose or a barbecue gas can, make sure the gas reaches the tank properly (piston-filled, leak-free, etc.) and do not let the hose or gas spill into the tank. Remove and discard the gas can immediately if it spits or leaks gas. Check the gas tank from time to time and make sure the filler cap is firmly secured by a rubber ring.
The bike is standard for the 67cc, the Phantom 1000 has a longer stroke, larger capacities are available (dry and full) and the bike weighs a little more than the 67. Craig Vetter said it was much heavier when first introduced with less capacity.
The seat and tank are steel and have a powder coated black finish. The tank has Vetter’s name on it and the seat has a carry-strap. They both have steel frames. The tank is a small butterfly and has a filler for oil. This tank has more filler capacity than a normal tank. The motorcycle has been repainted from a Jet Blue model to a painting called “Hellacious” by an artist who is now retired. The fairing was not painted but has graphics applied. Since I have disassembled it, it would be more than ok to paint the fairing the old way.
What does this fairing do for the bike? It protects the bike from the weather, it makes it more aerodynamic and keeps dust and pollen out of it. It also allows the fairing to be used to advertise for Vetter dealers. The fairing has a windshield, wind deflector, large mudguard, back and a side flap. It has a few cross winds and a number of side winds and probably protects from some sprays also. It can take a lot of punishment too.
Notice in the picture above that the fairing is a one-piece unit. The fairing is completely removable allowing quick access to the engine, exhaust, and drive train. When Craig Vetter launched the Windjammer series he designed the fairing to be removable and relocatable so it could be easily installed on another motorcycle. I believe I am the first to do a cracked fairing restoration and I am very proud of this restoration and think it represents the highest standards of restoration work that is done today on these Windjammer units.
Most of the Windjammers are painted in black and have a chrome finish. The original color of the fairing is a blend of black and bright red. The bottom of the fairing below the front seta has been repainted in the new color. On an early unit there is a chrome bumper at the front of the bike and a chrome bumper on the engine as well. The fairing is one of the earliest that was painted in black with bright red highlights and has the same blue-collar theme that is evident in some of Craig Vetter’s other design work. As a complement to the original color, the new paint colors of black and blue were selected to depict the future for Craig Vetter’s first truly series production motorcycle. If you study closely, you will see that the bright red theme is even present on the black trim that is applied on some of the Vetter logos.
The only item of interest on the fairing is the little plastic air pump on the right side. According to the Vetter web site this was a new feature in the 1973 model year for the windjammer II series.
Craig Vetter created the Windjammer series as an innovative way to design a fairing for a motorcycle and then to manufacture it. He was innovative in the choice of materials in the design, the innovative use of aluminum and plastic, and the unique design and manufacturing processes that were used to create his Windjammer series.
