Background
As early as 1928, a German codebreaking operation was discovered during the Test Year of the German Navy’s radio and telegraph systems. The naval codebreakers, however, broke the key in only a very few days, and their efforts made no significant contribution to the way naval communication was handled throughout the inter-war years.
It was only during World War II that a model of imagination and planning characterised the work of the British codebreakers. The German ‘Shpansberg System’, which remained a closely guarded secret, was eventually broken in the British Security Service, B Branch, during 1943. This code was used by most major German navies in the second half of the war.
Further planning at B4 was, for example, the use of a ‘PADOG’ (‘Pattern of Activity and Direction of Gear’) by Hermann Göring. Breaking this ‘MARS’ code was done by a team which also included Alan Turing, Joan Clarke, John Tiltman, Hugh Alexander Greenlees and Harold B. Granville. While British codebreakers had broken the German naval codes of World War I, 1939 to 1942 (known as ‘HMSO’ during the war), their efforts focused on the ‘Kriegsmarine’ (German Navy), specifically the ‘MARS’ system, which would later lead to the Battle of the Falkland Islands (1982). This was the first time that the British and American code breaking capability was combined and their efforts, led by Alan Turing, were responsible for breaking the ‘Scharnhorst’ code, which led to the Battle of Barents Sea (1943).
In the following years the purpose of the signal intelligence staff was enlarged and the importance of breaking code increased. Particularly in World War II the British codebreakers succeeded in major tasks and scuppered German plans through their efforts. These tasks were the deciphering of enemy codes (the “Enigma machine could not be cracked either, but it did not speak code at all, so the key was found simply by trying all the possible signals combinations for potential codes) and in breaking important German codes.
