if one were to tell it from the outside, the fact that wolf of wall street is an odyssey through the dizzying heights and depths of the junk bond market would sound absurd. it’s a story of high life, wild partying, the dizzying heights of the market, and the dizzying depths of the market. the movie follows the exploits of high-level bond traders in the mid-80s, most of whom are obsessed with the winning bond trade of the day. by any standards, they are privileged people, and if not exactly richer than croesus, they certainly have the lifestyle to go with it. they use their connections to get the best bond deals, relish their lavish parties, go on exotic trips, and think nothing of lying to their wives and girlfriends in order to get what they want. and when they lose, they end up on some of the most absurd — and potentially deadly — criminal activities.
the movie follows jordan belfort’s experiences in the world of wall street. belfort is a brokerage firm whose primary market is to institutional investors, and not in the literal sense that the average person who invests in the stock market. this is a highly-traded market where the big guns rule. in fact, these guys are over the top. they are not your run-of-the-mill broker who goes up to a client’s office to sell bonds. these are serious players who are what is called “accredited investors” when the company is a small one and “institutional investors” when the company is on the big board. their clients also include mutual funds, pension funds, investment pools, international investment companies, investment banks, and hedge funds.
soon, jordan finds himself in possession of millions – but a large chunk of them to him doesn’t seem to add up, and the greed and wits that his true nature is something he can’t hide. his penny stock operations eventually garner him back the million dollars they cost him and leaves him a few million dollars over. soon, he earns a reputation as being the most successful stockbroker in the business and is hired to manage a new firm, stratton oakmont. the firm soon takes in a slew of high powered graduates of the wharton school of business who specialize in low-risk stockpicking. jordan steps into his new position and is the complete opposite of the low-risk stock pickers as he becomes a high-risk, high-pay gambler who takes part in a host of questionable business deals. he soon turns to his old firm for assistance with strategy on a $45 million stock take-over, and once the stock market drops, he needs money, any money, to cover the colossal losses that follow. he quickly gets into a world of violence and drugs, an infamous part of wall street, and is soon on the road to becoming a legend. i had a feeling that might happen. yes, i had one too. the momentum in ‘the wolf of wall street’ is powered by its riotous, very masculine, very new york, very fast paced, and very witty. as we jump from character to character, stockbroker to stockbroker, broker to drug addict, we are cut from the same ruthless, hard-nosed, and money driven cloth as jordan. the screenplay is a hodgepodge of famous quotes from ‘wall street’ movie characters and life, as well as ‘taxi driver’remembrances, and terence winter has done a brilliant job of fleshing out the story with his own words from the captivating memoir that was a book that i read twice. the cast are always on the edge of their seats and the performances are fantastic throughout. the film’s visuals are outrageous, each character is represented to perfection and is everything you’d expect, and the acting is always impeccable. the film is a bit too unbelievable and over the top to be taken seriously at times, especially for children and families, but that’s not what it’s about. this is the type of movie you jump into, drive out of your mind, and then instantly forget. to be the villain in this sort of story is an honor (and a heavy responsibility), but everyone does a good job of depicting it. a great narrative, character-driven film that doesn’t disappoint. 5ec8ef588b
