the second half of the book begins with three essays on aristotle’s de anima. these essays discuss the nature and purpose of the soul, the process of the soul’s becoming, and the role of reason in the soul. in the third section, aquinas discusses the human body, the soul, and the spirit. the former two sections are organized under the general titles of the trials of the soul and the body. the latter is divided into four parts: the nature of spirit; the motion of the soul; the human powers; and the reasoning power. in the treatise on the power of god, thomas explains how the knowledge of god’s infinite perfection is acquired by reason. he also discusses the nature of god, the essence of the world, the relationship of human beings to god, and the beatific vision. the summa contra gentiles contains thomas’s presentation of aristotle’s views on god’s nature and the world, and his critique of pagan ideas on nature, the human soul, the body, the virtues, and the arts. this was written for a dominican community in paris, and is not, therefore, in latin.
in his book the quest for peace, cardinal joseph ratzinger, the future pope benedict xvi, recalls the pace in terris encyclical of pope john xxiii in order to recall the fundamental theological and pastoral foundations of the possibility of peace, and to underline that an adequate response to the problems of peace can only be possible with a correct understanding of human nature. the author, in these pages, analyses the encyclical of john xxiii and interprets its meaning and its possible consequences in a new light. the quest for peace is not simply a book about the encyclical of the great pope john xxiii, but is primarily a reflection on the present and future of the quest for peace in the church. in particular, it addresses the theme of peace in the church, her mission, her pastoral role and her charismatic nature, all of which it interprets in the light of the encyclical. the book is a contribution to the serious and responsible mission of the church in the world today.
