Hey, I just had an interesting experience. I moved an old laptop to my newly built home and got everything hooked up. All was going good… I plugged in my cable modem and it all of a sudden started going slow. I tried to figure out why, but the system seemed to work fine. As I was checking around I noticed my CPU usage was climbing up and climbing up. Then, a screen started flashing randomly… later, everything turned off and it started saying it wasn’t shutting down properly.
So, I’m curious… does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening and how to prevent it? Is this a virus?

I have looked all over the place for an answer to this problem. All of the simple, regular virus/anti virus programs don’t detect any problems with the program. Please help.

This would be because a process that was started by your user account has not been cleaned up properly, and is not getting cleaned up.
I had a similar problem once on Windows 7, and it turned out to be a system process that was storing log files in my user directory. Those log files were being written to while the system was shut down, so the disk was effectively full, and eventually the system got stuck because it couldn’t create new log files.
The fact that the problem only happens when you try to shut down the computer is a giveaway that the log files are the problem. Since the system is unable to create those files, it will just panic and force a shutdown.
The solution was to set the shutdown priority of the process to 0 (low), and that fixed the problem.
