superficiality isn’t the only accusation that can be made against shields. rather, she has come under a barrage of criticism for alleged ageism. until she was fourteen, shields told people, she had never even looked at a magazine, never mind thought to herself, i want to be in a magazine. though i was very shy as a child, i think that deep inside i was a very confident, self-assured kid. i already wanted to be an actress, so i had to go along with it.
the fact is, shields coulda been a good actor if she had applied herself. when the thin line between acting and reality gets blurred, shields has yet to prove that she was not just acting when she suggested that the photo shoot was meant to entice hollywood to cast her as a child star. this is one of the few things you can say about shields that makes sense. shields may have been born to be pretty, but she will probably never be considered a talented actress.
shields is still feeling the effects of the backlash over her sugar & spice photos. in a 2003 interview, shields justified the photos as reflecting her true personality, saying ive always been the person that i think i am. even if they were taken at a younger age, the female sexuality has been with me since i was 12, has affected me throughout my life. and you cant discount sex: it affects everyone, i dont care what age they are. its the simple truth. when the rolling stone interview came out, the shields in the article had aged, but the article still described her young, innocent self. then, a few years later, again, she was 45 and just as innocent as she ever was when she was 12. shields is never the same age twice.
