At its release, AutoCAD was not intended for professional use, as its object-based architecture was not competitive with the pre-existing vector-based packages, such as the ArcInfo system (later known as ESRI’s GIS) and its associated CAD package, MapInfo, by ESRI. The closest competitive product, to some extent, was the AutoCAD Mapper program, developed by Raphael Brunner, which permitted users to use an early version of AutoCAD-specific commands, as well as special lines, polylines, circles, arcs, and other geometry features. (Note that Brunner’s product predates AutoCAD, and AutoCAD was originally developed by J. William Laska.) However, AutoCAD’s object-based architecture offered significant advantages over earlier CAD packages, and ultimately over GIS, for several reasons.
First, object-based architecture permitted the creation of complex custom objects, such as surfaces and solids, without requiring the user to manually “draw” the custom geometry. Rather, the objects were constructed by “typing” their properties into a block diagram.
Second, AutoCAD’s object-based architecture allowed “snap to” features in subsequent editing, which made it very easy to position, orient, and manipulate the geometry of the objects.
Third, object-based architecture enabled the creation of complex object hierarchies, with various levels of detail and of manipulation. For example, while the “raster” objects used in conventional vector-based CAD packages, such as CADsoft, MapInfo, and ArcInfo, could be edited and manipulated, all but the highest level of detail of a vector-based object could not be modified. A feature, for example, that was created at the highest level of detail, or in “polyline” or “arc” edit mode, could be changed at the lower levels of detail only if the user first re-created it.
Fourth, the ability to be repositioned without having to manually redraw or redisplay the objects, along with the ability to view the objects in perspective, enabled the development of large, complex designs.
Fifth, the object-based architecture of AutoCAD allowed object properties to be changed on the fly, without the need to recalculate the object or redraw it.

2. Description of the Related Art
There is known an illumination and display device in which a light source is disposed on one side of a liquid crystal panel. In such a known illumination and display device, a light source such as a fluorescent lamp or a cold cathode tube is used. If the light source is a fluorescent lamp, the light from the fluorescent lamp is directly applied onto the liquid crystal panel. On the other hand, if the light source is a cold cathode tube, the light from the cold cathode tube is reflected by a reflector toward the liquid crystal panel.
According to the above construction, however, there arises a problem in that, since the light source is disposed away from the liquid crystal panel, the light from the light source inevitably undergoes an optical loss to cause a decrease in the luminance of the illumination and display device. In order to solve the problem, it has been proposed to dispose a light guide plate between the light source and the liquid crystal panel. The light from the light source is applied into the light guide plate to propagate through the light guide plate. A portion of the light propagated through the light guide plate is directed to the liquid crystal panel through a light-emitting surface of the light guide plate.
If the light guide plate is placed on the liquid crystal panel side, it is necessary to provide an optical member such as a reflection plate or a prism on a light-emitting surface of the light guide plate in order to increase the brightness of the light directed to the liquid crystal panel.
