lucky dube was born in 1968 in a small village in the democratic republic of congo, a country that has been ravaged by war. this is not the first time he has had to escape from the fighting. in 2000, he moved to kinshasa in the hopes of finding work and avoiding the war. “my family was living a peaceful life,” he tells me. “we were moving to different houses every three months because there were so many fighting around us. the war is always around us because there’s always fighting in congo. it took a long time for me to come to the united states.”
his first album, lucky dube, released on the motown label in 2005, was made with the help of his cousin, who was also the producer. his music is characterized by a blend of reggae, hip hop, and african-influenced jazz. he has collaborated with many other artists, including rapper jay-z, who sampled him for his song “mr. president.” the grammy-nominated hit was sampled on the song “america the beautiful.”
