released as a free download on january 2, 2013, to fans of owsla, the three-track ep, titled leaving, was an important moment in the careers of both skrillex and owsla. on leaving, the producers complete their collaboration and offer up three songs that are reminiscent of a more intimate skrillex. no longer the battle-hardened dubstep king, he has made room for other sounds and more and more room for his listeners to do the same.
the self-titled third studio album by american dj and producer skrillex, released on owsla records on january 21, 2013, to celebrate the label’s anniversary. the album, produced entirely by skrillex, makes heavy use of glitch hop and drum and bass, along with dubstep and breakbeat influences. the album received widespread acclaim from critics upon its release, and reached the top five on the billboard 200 album chart. after the album release, skrillex, citing that he could have done more than he did with the album, would release a new ep titled leftover tracks.
the leaving ep, released in early 2013, was a bit of a departure from skrillex earlier work. in hindsight, its not all that different. its still got plenty of glitch and goes heavy on the bass, but it was one of the first times we saw a more thoughtful, less bash-you-in-the-face skrillex song. the reason is a halfway point between its most somber moments and the skrill everyone had, up until that point, come to know and love.
andres scenario later, theres the latter half of the reason. a track that was never intended to be on leaving. after moore saw the impact it had on the charts he began working on a deeper version of the same vocal sample, taking it to a more serious place. theres a delirious drop, a real skyrocketing bassline, and a vocal sample from the chorus of the 2000 pop hit leave right now. its a beautiful moment, yet its also the exact moment in leaving where a lot of skrillex fans start questioning his true musical vision. not the drop, not the vocal, not the samples, but the whole thing. theres a palpable drop in quality on leaving. this song could have been amazing. its good in its own right and there are some solid beats, but its strange that its the most well-received song in a series of 4 singles. if anything, its the b-side.
