Calculate value or return a default value?
Sometimes when writing a function I’m presented with these questions.
For instance I have this function that takes an integer as a parameter that is given to the function when it is called.
[SomeFunction(“123”)]
private void DoSomething(int value)
{
// Do Something

The question is, should the function return a default value or return 0 or throw an exception?
The default question may be the easiest one but I’m interested to know about your experiences.
A:
Considering your question is not about coding (it’s about application design), you must check if the calling code knows about the default value and acts appropriately.
If, for example, in your scenario the function should not be called if the integer is not specified in the function call, you could throw an ArgumentException or ArgumentNullException, something like this:
void DoSomething(int? value)
{
if (value == null)
{
throw new ArgumentNullException(“value”);
}
// other stuff
}
If instead of a nullable integer, the caller passes a fixed value for the integer parameter, then it is a different case: in this case return the default value (or don’t return if you need to perform some specific operation and don’t want it to be performed if the integer is not provided). For example:
void DoSomething(int value)
{
// Do Something
if (value!= 10) return;
// do something else
}

I would consider this a design issue. In general, you should avoid returning fixed default values. It indicates to the caller that the response from the function is meaningful only if a value is present, and fixes the behavior of a method without needing to add information to the method signature. In some cases this is desirable (such as when the method is supposed to return a value, but may need to return 0 instead if it’s not given a suitable value). In other cases, it’s a bad idea.
The same is true of using exceptions. Exceptions should indicate that something exceptional is happening that is not expected by the caller, so that they can fix the problem by adjusting their behavior
