Introduction

Opportune is a simply-configured instrument tuner, like LED-based hardware
strobe tuners. It has no pitch detection, but instead shows a ring of
lights for each note the instrument can play. This means that it responds
instantly and does not waver between notes. New instruments can be easily
added by editing a simple XML file.

You can use this interface either by a graphical user interface, which shows the interface is displayed as a browser interface, or using the command line interface. Both interfaces support the same functions.
The Graphical User Interface uses the SVG HTML 5 Canvas element for image display. It is to be used in combination with the Java Eclipse (or suitable IDE) client implementation. If you don’t want to learn about the Java programming language yet, then the command line interface is the way to go.
The options page (accessible from the top menu bar) contains 8 different pages, which specify the different instruments, their configuration, as well as settings for the graphical user interface and the command line interface. Most instrument related options (width of the strip, resolution, etc.) can be found on the settings page. A few parameters (such as tuning offset) can be set on the options page, and all other parameters are set in the instruments configuration.

The GUI can be accessed in a browser. It contains a set of instructions about how to set up the tuner. Open the directory containing the instrument tuner. The tuner is located in the ‘bin’ directory.

Opportune
Opportune uses a single LED ring (in a lower right corner of the screen) to tell you whether the guitar, or other stringed instrument, is sharp, flat or on pitch.
Opportune operates on a hardware cycle of 1ms, and uses an external DAC (digital to analog converter) to read the sounds played by the instrument, and display the results. This means you can use the instrument to play chords, and have Opportune read them all at once. You do not need to cycle through individual notes.
In the past, Opportune has used a digital microphone, and run it through a windows software synchronisation process, to find out which note was being played. This has proved reliable, but is slow and requires Windows to be running.
Opportune now has a native USB MIDI interface. This means it can be synced to almost any analog or digital audio device running MIDI, or any software which can use MIDI. It can either be treated as a MIDI interface, or as an instrument and control via a USB hub.
Opportune is able to detect any note being played on a guitar, bass, violin, cello, banjo, and any other stringed instrument. It is capable of determining which string is being struck (for guitars only), and can detect guitars with tremolo systems. This means you can use your instrument while another person is playing and hear each note clearly!
Opportune does not have the ability to detect pitch or intensity.
Opportune can detect open strings, and the exact octave and tuning of each string being played. Most other tuners cannot do this.
To tune, simply place the instruments faceup on a flat surface, such as the table or desk, and look at the LED ring. If the LED is steadily rotating as you go up a note, you have hit the note correctly.
If it rotates counterclockwise, you have missed a note. This is the most common error made by users.
If it stays still, you are not on pitch. Check the instrument first, and see if it is off pitch.
The internal database stores not only the pitch of the note, but also its octave. The database can be customised by the user.
