The resolutions go to the Senate, which can either try the impeachment or permit the President to serve out the remainder of his term, leaving an explosive transition of executive power in its wake. Obama has already indicated that he will leave office when his current term expires in 2017, and he has enough time before the 2016 election to get over any potential embarrassments that might come out of the transition. In addition, with only a small number of legal challenges facing the new administration, as well as a number of Republican senators ready to work with the President, this issue could prove to be a moot one by 2017.

the reflexive quality of the romney campaign is exemplified by the most revealing moment of romney’s convention speech. the nomination night, after the first day of the convention, was dominated by a violent anti-obama demonstration outside the arena. a small group of very peaceful anti-war activists carried anti-war flags, and they were chanting “hey, hey, ho, ho, the war is over,” and “no blood for oil.”
in other words, he is well versed in the reflexive defense of the bush/cheney administration, perhaps even more than his opponent. obama will likely follow this advice, by the way. he may even adopt bush/cheney’s preemption doctrine, to use an old term from the cold war. if an attack on u.s. soil is deemed imminent, the president may go to congress to ask for a declaration of war. in that case, he would have the legal power to pre-empt any other attack, whether by iraq or iran or whomever.
