    I want to design the access point antenna (I want to design a 3d printed one, so I want to know what does it need). How can I calculate the antenna size and where to put the antenna, what is the best location? My design is 8 dBi, what is the efficiency of my design, what is the gain of my design?

    A:

    I have done antenna design with a small laser printer. I’m sure it’s close enough to 8 dBi but I don’t have any numbers. If your printed antenna is large enough (higher than a few cm) then it will have a fairly uniform radiation pattern. You can get a fairly good idea if you print a calibrated antenna sample that you can point in different directions.
    To find out if you have an adequate gain you’d have to model the antenna (including the printed part) with a circuit simulator that handles for radiation coupling. For example, Circuitlab. For simulation I’d use the suite of microwave circuit models that come with it.
