SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS OF THE FANTASY RPG
If you look at the market in the fantasy RPG genre of the last generation, you’d be hard pressed to find even a single title that caught my attention. While I would love to say that it is mainly because I’m a fan of Japanese games, I’m almost sure it’s because these games started to feel the slings and arrows of the long-fabled gap between the developer’s aspirations and the player’s expectations of what they were capable of doing.
This gap is accompanied by many other problems. The ratio of story lines to limited resources is very unfavorable, leading to a stagnation of game-world development. The number of options to develop the characters and their relationships is low, resulting in a lack of nuance in the characters themselves. Of course, you can press through all that as long as you’re willing to invest a large amount of time, but that’s the fun of the genre for you, isn’t it?
However, after I went to PAX East 2018, I realized that there were a number of titles that had been making an attempt to address all these problems and were already over a year into production. It’s a bright prospect and I believe that the genre has just begun to realize the potential of creating a fantasy RPG with a wide range of appeal and depth that stands toe-to-toe with traditional RPG titles.

Genome-wide linkage analysis of eight facial traits in the Hutterite population.
Facial phenotype variability results from a complex assortment of genetic and environmental factors. In this study, linkage analysis was applied to establish genome-wide genetic linkage profiles of eight facial traits. Ancestry-informative markers were selected through genome-wide scans of 517 members of a Hutterite population from the High Plains of the American Prairies. Family members were phenotyped for 19 facial traits, and multipoint analyses were undertaken with SOLAR. Identified significant peaks from the face and hand for specific traits also survived replication for both sexes. The greatest peaks of multipoint linkage were observed for overall facial shape, upper facial height, width, and elevation of the brow ridge. Locus CA3 on chromosome 2 showed a specific association with increased protrusion of the lower lip, and in addition, a suggestive linkage with isolated upward rotation of the eyes was observed. Locus 20p12 showed suggestive linkage with flat nose. Most of these traits were associated with variability of the underlying underlying bone, and a number of these chromosomes harbor the genes of bone transcription factors.
