I read in this tutorial that when recording I need to press an arc button on my TG-500 while recording. Why is this? What is actually recording?

Multimeno 1 is multi channel input I/O. When you see numbers like “1,2,3” you are hearing the 3 signals input. If you look at the front panel you will see 1 to 4/5,6-9. How are you supposed to know which signals are playing? Looks like most user take it for granted but its not obvious at all.
Pressing the button allows the Multimeno to record in real time using Yamaha’s proprietary “legacy” format. Normal computer recording systems use their own proprietary formats or DAW’s now so you won’t be able to import the session into most DAW’s. The other formats are usually adequate to your soundcard to import into some DAW’s. The settings vary on the sound card. I have had good results with the Audigy series. The card is user configurable so you should be able to configure it to record in real time.
Recording:
Each channel is recorded independently. You will need to press the
Rec button to start recording. As the recording is in real time
(there is no holding and rewinding) it is important to listen to all
channels and record what you want.
Be careful not to record to the wrong channel since there is no
obvious way to know. Clicking the ‘Stop’ button will play back the
session. The system will stop when you press it again.
Keep in mind that if you are recording a mix of guitar,bass and
drums there will be two channels of audio.
If you are familiar with recording in other systems you would simply adjust the channels for separate inputs. You would usually set up for stereo recording. For this TG-500 you would want the right and left inputs.
Each channel has controls to adjust level and balances, It also has
controls to adjust the VU meter and the level from the selected input.
If you are not familiar the controls should be obvious and I won’t delve into detail on them here.
